Rules
OOC Rules
- DM's and Admins have final say over moderation on the server. If you have an issue with a decision, please bring it up privately.
- No racism or other bigotry is allowed in chat.
- Treat everyone with respect on the server.
- You must be 18 or older to play on AEI
- Please don't discuss sensitive topics such as religion, politics etc outside of any designated channel should it exist.
- 18+ content is forbidden from being posted on the server. Keep it private.
- Just use common sense!
- A character without any build is not valid for roleplay. You must spend your starting allocation of attribute and skill points using /train.
RP Rules
- You must accept valid injury or consequence for your IC actions. A DM is able to mediate such instances where there are disagreements over this.
- No characters under 18 years old.
- No lore characters, or characters with names like major lore characters. (common names are fine)
- Keep OOC to OOC channels, or mark with brackets.
- This server enforces a permadeath system. You can die at any time.
- No meta- or powergaming. Your character has to find things out themselves to act on them, and they cannot be or have something they have not earned. This includes transfer of assets between characters. When in doubt, consult with a DM!
- Keep overtly adult themed RP out of spatial. Whispers or anon posting is not sufficient.
- PvP actions can only be performed through consent of the other party, or with a sufficient casus belli.
Permadeath
Permadeath specifically refers to your character dying, as oppose to having gone down and being incapacitated. Under normal circumstances, a character is not at risk of being permanently killed, though there are several situations under which you can be.
Permadeath can apply if:
- the event you attend was marked as such clearly by the DM. DMs will always warn attending players that the event carries a certain threat level, on a scale of 1 - 10.
- your character does something unquestionably lethal, for example throwing themselves on an explosive.
- you are engaged in agreed or casus belli PvP. The loser of the PvP fight is at the mercy of the winner, they can choose to kill their opponent, though such actions can carry consequences of their own.
- you are overtly using the Force in any scenario, or are already known to your opponent(s) as a Force user.
It is important to note that characters can die from non-combat reasons. Always be mindful of what your character is doing, and what the consequences could and would be!
Travel and Event Ringfencing
While it's not mechanically enforced on the server, narratively, travel takes time on AEI. While we generally wish to see travel time being taken into account, we do enforce some measures to prevent players from joining in progress events.
An event, meaning any situation being overseen by a DM, planned or emergent, is considered ringfenced as soon as it is initiated, this means that people outside of that event can only intervene or interact with it under specific conditions. Players who were not on planet at the time of the initiation of the event will be unable to join. If your character was in a position to reasonably get to the event (DM discretion,) you may join at a point designated by the DM.
Character Backgrounds
As a general rule, we do not allow special character backgrounds, including, but not limited to:
- (Former) Jedi
- high ranking member of a faction
- a famous individual
- the descendent of a lore character
Exceptions to this can be made under specific circumstances, with appropriate cause. If you wish to discuss a special background, contact us in a support ticket on Discord
Controlling NPCs
A commonly desired goal or ability for players is to have command over NPC allies, and to an extent, we wish to facilitate this. However, we also impose restrictions on how this looks. Here are some key points:
- Players can potentially command a number of troops of the faction they belong to, provided they hold an appropriate rank.
- NPCs will always be primarily loyal to their factions, and will refuse orders against what their faction stands for.
- Players cannot reach politically significant positions, nor can they command entire armies or fleets. Players may earn control of individual ships or of military units through accomplishments in duty.
- NPCs are never implicitly available, they can only be used when explicitly permitted by the DM(s) in charge of an event.
- Holding rank does not automatically infer authority over NPCs.
Communication between players
With the new patch we will be adding a new command. /comm.
This command will hopefully replace the need to ever /tell anyone for commlink communication.
- Players can use this command to communicate with other players, with distances and validity accounted for. If the /comm command does not work, that is that.
- A future holocomm command will also be added for visual and longer distance use.
- All comm communication not done through the command is considered invalid. This is including /tell. If you need it to be anonymous or hidden, use /anon.
Player Versus Player
An unfortunate and often very stressful reality of roleplay are player versus player situations. As our goal is to create a space to enjoy roleplay in for everyone equally, we have put in place tight rules on PvP.
Casus Belli
A fundamental and critical component of PvP is the absolute requirement for a good, IC reason to attack another player. This is not just to actually kill them, but also for other actions, such as harming, stealing, threatening, plotting, etc. Whether such actions have good cause is up to the administration, when there are disagreements between the players. A player may also voluntarily accept a PvP action against them, even without a casus belli.
"Coincidences of Destiny"
If a valid casus belli exists between two players, some additional rules about location and timing must be observed. As stated above, travel takes time in AEI. This is often handwaved for RP convenience if there are no stakes, however if a rival player is located at the destination, travel is once again considered, and the situation on the planet, regardless of combat or social setting, is ringfenced and cannot be interacted with by the other player, unless agreed on otherwise by the rival players.
In-Character Hunt
In order to pursue a player, be it as a bounty or for personal reasons, an IC effort must be made to search for them, and track them down accurately. OOCly obtained knowledge of whereabouts are not sufficient, neither is simply waiting at popular social hangouts, unless there is IC cause to believe they are coming there.
Multiple Characters
In most situations, if the presence of multiple characters of a single player is ICly justified by a third party, they may participate. However, in a PvP situation every player may only control one character. Other characters may not be brought along, and if they are, they are not allowed to contribute in combat or conversation.
The Encounter
In order to minimise disagreements and ensure fair play, it is required for PvP to be litigated by a DM. Players should do the /ping command on all players present, and then announce that they are calling for a DM to oversee combat. If there are disagreements, and no evidence of positioning exists, DMs are obligated to take the situation as they first encountered it. If all parties agree, the encounter can be run without DM litigation.
Obtaining Information
In order to act on information, a player character must somehow obtain said information. This can be either through research (if they have reason to look for it,) or by being told by other characters, be they player or NPC. Information that is known to the player, but not the character cannot be acted on, and two characters belonging to the same player cannot share information unless there is a legitimate third party involvement, or reason for said sharing of information.
This equally counts for knowing that information was shared. If your character does not ICly realise that information was shared by others, they cannot act on this knowledge until they discover it.
It can often be difficult to act, deliberately ignoring facts. We will not punish honest lapses of judgement or mistakes, but egregious, deliberate or PvP related instances will be retconned.
